A Luxury Style Holiday for Less

This year I have planned my honeymoon, as I traditionally travel on a low budget, I have tried to find ways to travel in what I would call luxury for a bit less money. Basically I want to to enjoy a luxury holiday and have a champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget.

There are certain times in life when a budget holiday by the sea just won’t do. Honeymoons, anniversaries and milestone birthdays are all such occasions, but with the average honeymoon costing around £4000, they don’t come cheap.

However, there are ways you can get a luxury stay for a fraction of the price. This guide will give you hints and tips to make sure you get a holiday with that special touch and don’t break the bank.

Not about the destination

When it comes to luxury it isn’t always about the destination, it’s about the experience you have during your stay. Essentially you’ll want a comfortable bed, a good shower, great food and gorgeous decor. If you have all those things it won’t matter whether you’re in Lisbon or London.

Stay close to home

When you book your holiday look for: end of season deals, cheap budget deals (so you can spend more on accommodation), and consider staying closer to home. Long haul flights cost big money, so look for luxury breaks in your home country, or somewhere only an hour or two’s flight away.

B&B is best

Don’t underestimate the luxury you can find in a B&B. Better class B&Bs have been on the rise for a long time and they’re the perfect way to get the high quality of a boutique hotel for a low price.

Be cheeky

Use the occasion to your advantage! If you’re travelling for a special occasion mention it when booking your stay, and don’t be afraid to be a bit cheeky. This is the one time when you’re most likely to get a discount or something extra thrown in. Definitely ask the hotel owners or travel operators if they can offer you something better as it’s your honeymoon/anniversary/big birthday. The worst they can say is no.

Reduce your stay. If staying for 10 days means you’ll have a lower quality of accommodation then cut your stay to seven or five days. That way you can still have all the benefits of a luxury break, but you won’t blow your budget.

Go last minute

Last, but definitely not least, if you don’t have a particular destination in mind, look for last minute ‘flash’ deals. You could get a big discount on an all-inclusive luxury hotel, and discover somewhere you’ve never been before!

It’s always worth mentioning your honeymoon when booking into a hotel. On our honeymoon in Singapore we were asked when checking into our room if we minded having separate beds. The clerk was so mortified when I said, ‘Well no, it’s actually our honeymoon’ that she upgraded us to a suite that was bigger than our house.
