Incase you didnt know im a huge huge fan of Lonely Planet. Ive tried a few of the competitors but keep coming back to
the Lonely Planet series and recently read The Lonely Planet Story and enjoyed learning about the history of the company.
Ive been a bit of a collector of guide books and have some great ones as well as the big coffee table books like The Travel Book.
One Lonely Planet guide thats always fascinated me is the original ‘south east asia on a shoestring’. It is an iconic travel book first published in 1975. Often refered to as the yellow bible hundreds to thousands of travellers used it as the only point of reference all that time ago. I have always wanted a first edition copy to read through and take with me for a trip to south east asia.
Unfortunately I’ve never been able to find a first edition however today im excited! 🙂 I’ve found a 1977 copy and hopefully its on its way to me right now in the post. I actually cannot wait to read it and see what guide books were like 35 years ago.
The nice picture below is from 1989 as I cant find what the 1977 copy looks like which makes me even more excited to see what that yellow and green cover looks like when it lands on my doormat!
